Go to: Antony and Cleopatra Table of Contents where you can also compare this scene to Shakespeare’s original.
Athens, Greece. Another room in Mark Antony’s house.
(Domitius Enobarbus and Eros enter from separate sides)
Domitius Enobarbus: My friend, Eros! How are you?
Eros: We’ve received some strange news, sir.
Domitius Enobarbus: What is it, man?
Eros: Caesar and Lepidus have attacked Pompey.
Domitius Enorbarbus: That’s old news. Who won?
Eros: Caesar used Lepidus to help in the war against Pompey, but then he wouldn’t let Lepidus take any of the credit. Then, as if that weren’t enough, Caesar accused Lepidus of writing to Pompey and conspiring with him. On his own authority, Caesar has arrested Lepidus and sentenced him to life in prison.
Domitius Enobarbus: Then, world, you only have two men in you now, Caesar and Antony. Throw all your food inbetween them and let them fight over it like dogs. Where’s Antony?
Eros: He’s walking in the garden – like this (Eros imitates Mark Antony pacing back and forth) – and yelling at the bushes, “You fool, Lepidus!” And he’s threatening to cut the throat of the man who killed Pompey.
Domitius Enobarus: Our great navy is ready to sail.
Eros: Toward Italy and Caesar. Oh, Domitius! Antony wants to talk to you. I should have told you the news after you talked to him.
Domitius Enobarbus: Don’t worry. It won’t matter. Take me to Antony.
Eros: This way.
